Cetti's Warbler
Scientific Name: Cettia cettiMaltese Name: Bufula ta' l-Ghollieq
Family: Warblers and allies (Sylviidae)
Occurence: Common Resident
Breeds in Malta: Yes
Breeding Frequency: Common
Overview:
A medium sized, rather compact warbler with uniform red-brown plumage from above. It is a lively active flicking its wings and tail regularly. Breeds in dense, rather tall and often well-delimited vegitation, preferably near but not in water, eg. Bramble. Generally it keeps concealed in vegitation but it reminds us of its presence regularly by its sudden and loud song often echoing in valleys.
Status and Distribution:
Although its quite a recent addition to the Maltese Island's list of breeding bird, with the first breeding recorded confirmed in 1970, it has done really well, breeding in the majority of the valleys in Malta and Gozo. It doesn't breed on the Island of Comino, probabbly due to lack of dense vegitation such as bramble in which it tends to nest.
When to See:
All year round
Where to See:
Best places to see Cetti's Warbler in Malta are densley vegetated valleys. It also breeds in Ghadira and Simar Nature Reserves.
