Overview:
A large duck with a long, heavy bill (its name is explaned here), usually held over water as it swims with its shoulders almost awash. The Adult male in full breeding plumage is a striking combination of a blue forewing above, grean-black head, broad white band around chest and a deep rufous body. To complement, the large bill is black, its eyes are bright yellow and its legs are vivid orange. To feed, the shoveler uses its big bill to filter food from the water. Plankton, insects, crustaceans and molluscs are among the shoveler's favourites. Sometimes the Shoveler up-ends (its a dabbling duck) to feed. The shoveler usually gathers in flocks to winter and to migrate.
