Wryneck
Scientific Name: Jynx torquillaMaltese Name: Bulebbiet
Family: Woodpeckers and Wrynecks(Picadae)
Occurence: Regular
Breeds in Malta: No
Overview:
The Wryneck is a grayish dull bird. Its plumage resembles that of a Nightjar. Unlike Woodpeckers, which are close relatives, the Wryneck behaves more like a passerine resembling a sparrow, often perching. It is difficult to spot due to its plumage; blending with the surrounding landscape. As its name suggests, this bird has the ability to twist and turn its neck as it requires. It eats insects, mostly ants, by sticking its long tounge in holes of tree barks. It breeds in holes found in trees in agricultural countryside and small wooded areas. Migrates to Africa for the winter but some remain in the Mediterranean.
Status:
Common autumn and spring migrant. Some remain here for the winter.
When to See:
Autumn from September till October. In spring seen from end of March till early May. Some individuals overwinter; November till February.
Where to See:
Valleys with cover, open countryside and wooded areas. Buskett, Comino and both Simar and Ghadira Nature Reserves are good spots to see Wryneck.
